The operational problem
An operations screen shows a state of charge for a bus. Somewhere else it shows the state of charge expected at the end of the duty. The first was read from the vehicle a few minutes ago. The second comes from a consumption model. If the two are shown the same way, the person who reads them cannot tell how much weight each one carries.
Where a value came from is usually kept as technical metadata. The decision is taken on the screen, so that is where it has to be visible.
The method
This is implemented in KraftSync Transit, for the records of vehicles and of charging stations.
For every field of such a record the server keeps who wrote the last value:
| Kept with the value | What it says |
|---|---|
| Kind | Measured, computed or estimated |
| Source | The connector the value came through, for example a file import, a public transit data feed or the reference configuration |
| Measured at | The time in the system the value came from |
| Received at | The time it reached the server |
| Validation | Valid, rejected or not verified |
| Formula | For a computed value, the formula as text, where one was recorded |
The vehicle file shows this under each field: the kind, the source and how old the value is. Whether a value is still fresh is judged against the threshold of the connection it came through. A daily import is fresh for a day; a position feed is fresh for a few minutes. A value past its threshold stays on the screen and is marked expired. It is not removed and not replaced with a reference value.
Worked example: two figures in one vehicle file
Illustrative example The two values, 46 and 12 per cent, and the times are invented for this note. The layout follows the labels of the product; it is not a capture.
State of charge
46%
Measured Vehicle data feed · 2 minutes ago · fresh
State of charge at the end of the duty
12%
Estimated Consumption model · computed 2 minutes ago
The first figure can be checked against the vehicle. The second depends on a model of consumption, and on how well that model fits this route in this season. With the labels in place, a reader knows which of the two to act on directly and which to treat as a projection.
What the user can verify
- The kind of each value: measured, computed or estimated.
- The source it came through and how old it is.
- Whether it is fresh or expired for that connection.
- For a computed value, the formula, where one was recorded.
The interface does not show the assumptions of a model or its error for an estimated value. An estimate is marked as an estimate; how far it can be off is not on the screen.
Limits and status
- Implemented
- In KraftSync Transit: provenance kept for each field of vehicle and charging station records, and shown in the vehicle file.
- Reference data
- In the public reference environment the operational values are a reference scenario, part real and part estimated. A value with no recorded provenance keeps a label written for the scenario and is marked as reference.
- Not uniform across products
- The three labels exist in KraftSync Transit. The other products mark origin in their own way: TerraScan labels a report as real or indicative data and gives a confidence figure, CityTwin names the sources of an answer, and PHAROS states which of its data is synthetic. Each product page says what is labelled and how.
- Depends on the source
- A label is as reliable as what the connector declares. A value imported without a time of measurement is shown without one.
- Proposed, not implemented
- Showing, for an estimated value, the assumptions of the model and its error.

Changes to this note
- 11 October 2026. Rewritten from the implementation. Removed: that every operational figure in all our products carries one of the three labels, that a computed value can always be opened to its formula, and that an estimated value states its assumptions and its error. Added: what is kept with each value, what the interface shows, and what it does not. The figures of 46 and 12 per cent are marked as an illustration.
- 7 October 2026. The scope of the labels was first corrected in a separate note. Read it in the correction history
